We our in need of Safety Committee volunteers from the Engineering Department and Maintenance of Equipment Department to participate in the implementation of the new 49 CFR part 270 regulation. This new regulation goes into effect next year and will be phased in. The FRA recently presented an overview of the regulation to us, which among other things, requires the LIRR to develop a System Safety Plan with input from the unions. Numerous meetings will be held between the Carrier and the unions over the course of the next few years during the implementation I believe it will be a very useful tool as the new regulation holds the LIRR to a higher level of accountability and mandates increased training.
