Dear Sisters and Brothers,

As you are aware, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET), Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS), International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), and the Transportation Communications Union (TCU/IAM) have been negotiating jointly with the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) as a coalition since early last year. Together, our coalition represents approximately 55% of the unionized workforce at LIRR.

Late last year, after limited progress in direct negotiations, each of our organizations filed for mediation under the Railway Labor Act. Under the Railway Labor Act, mediation is controlled by The National Mediation Board (NMB) which has assigned two mediators to oversee the process. Each of the unions in the coalition has formally requested a release from mediation; however, we remain actively engaged at the bargaining table.

On May 21, 2025, we participated in a very productive mediation session. We expect the Carrier to respond with meaningful alternatives and proposals. The NMB has emphasized that time is of the essence, and we anticipate that our next session will be scheduled sometime during June, with the goal of determining whether a voluntary agreement is achievable.

Our coalition remains united and committed to securing a contract that respects the value, dedication, and skill of our members who keep the LIRR operating every day. While progress has been slow, we are resolute in our belief that the Carrier is capable of offering a fair and just agreement.

We are aware of the distractions and narratives that often arise during negotiations—such as unfounded claims of established wage patterns or alleged fiscal limitations. Be assured though, these tactics are familiar, and while they may complicate the process, they will not weaken our resolve.

We recognize this is a slow process and we appreciate the patience and support each of you have demonstrated. Our coalition has engaged the leading legal counsel and economist in the industry. Given the current economic climate, Consumer Price Index (CPI) analysis and comparative contracts reached on other commuter railroads in the country, we continue to be advised that our demands for better economic terms from the LIRR are solid and justified. We will continue to use every resource available to ensure our members receive a contract worthy of their support.

We sincerely thank you for your continued patience, solidarity, and support. We are committed to keeping you updated as developments arise.

In solidarity,

Kevin Sexton, General Chairman
