Hello Brothers and Sisters,
Firstly, I want to take a minute to thank Brother Jeffrey Klein for his time and dedication over the years to IBEW Local 589. I have had the pleasure of not only working with him on the shop floor, but also on the e-board as well as working for him when he was President. I also have the privilege to call him my friend. Jeff worked hard for all of us every day and he will be greatly missed. I wish him all the best and thank him for the service he provided for our local.
For those that may not know me, my name is Steve Schmitt and I started with the LIRR in 1999. In 2001 I became a union rep, in 2004 I was elected to the executive board and in 2007 I was elected as Financial Secretary where I have been ever since. I have handled CBA negotiations for all 5 of our divisions, as well as worked on many grievances and arbitrations. I am honest and always aim to be fair. As Acting President, I will continue to dedicate myself to doing the best job for our Local. I look forward to this new chapter in my life and hope you all give me the chance to prove myself in my new role.
